If you’ve hit a pothole or driven over a dangerously cracked road in Michigan, you’re not alone. Thousands of drivers every year report road damage — but many don’t know exactly where or how to submit a complaint.
Before reporting, check if the road is managed by your city, county, or the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Usually, highways and major state routes are maintained by MDOT, while local streets fall under city or county control.
Here’s where to report:
When possible, take photos of the pothole, note the exact location (nearest cross streets, landmarks), and write down the date and time you encountered it. This improves the chance of faster action.
If your car was damaged, you may be eligible to file a claim for reimbursement. Learn more about Michigan’s pothole damage claim process here.
